Mechanical Engineers

The aspirants who study mechanical engineering are called Mechanical Engineers. This study discipline takes in practice physics, chemistry, mathematics and materials science for investigation, design, make and maintenance of mechanical equipments. Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering taught in universities. Mechanical engineer work in office settings, however, they also need to share sufficient working hours in workshops and laboratories for analyzing and designing manufacturing plants, transport systems, industrial machinery, war weapons and medical devices. Mechanical engineers get work opportunities in all types of industries where machines work.

Role of a Mechanical Engineer

The job of a mechanical engineer is to come up with new machines and technologies and to maintain existing ones in industrial settings. A mechanical engineer performs following basic activities in job-

  • Tests mechanical devices and fix how a mechanical device is helpful in performing a given task
  • Create blueprints to develop new machines and tools
  • Responsible to develop and test the prototype of a device and analysis of test results
  • Looks after the manufacturing process of a machine and its functions

Skills Required for Mechanical Engineers

Academic requirement: Academically you need minimum bachelor’s degree i.e., B.E/B.Tech/B.S or equivalent from a recognized institute to start career as a Mechanical engineer. The bachelor’s degree in engineering is a 4year program offered to those candidates who have completed K-12 standard of education with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Working with rigorous mathematical and computational formulae and understanding the rendezvous of mechanics are some necessary trait to enroll in a bachelor’s program in Mechanical engineering.

To join postgraduate degree programs like MS, M.Tech and Ph.D etc. in mechanical engineering disciplines universities ask for score in standardized test followed by essay test and personality interview. Minimum qualification to join masters level program and higher is graduate qualification in Mechanical engineering and related discipline.

Skills required to be a Mechanical Engineer

To be successful in career one needs to possess the following personality traits:

Analytical skill requirements- Mechanical Engineer must possess sound analytical skills to understand the working circumstances of the Mechanical systems.

Business Skills Requirements- Mechanical Engineer must be good in numbers to predetermine what a project will cost and how a company or government will benefit from it.

Critical Thinking Abilities- Mechanical Engineer must be able to think under what circumstances designs, materials and end product or project may fail and what should be alternative options in case of a failure so as to minimize losses. Mechanical Engineers work in highly sensitive environments where a small glitch may cost you a fortune within no time.

Team Worker- Mechanical Engineer works in team, he / she must need to be a good team worker, able to learn and make others learn in work environment.

Writing Skills- Mechanical Engineer works in a team with fellow engineers and other coworkers. They should have good writing and designing skills to present clear papers which other team workers could fully understand.

Scope of Mechanical Engineering in India

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering in India. In India, mechanical engineers can work in industries like thermal oil, refining, power plants, education, aviation, automobile, agriculture, armed forces, and pharmaceutical. However, the scope of mechanical engineering is expanding theses days and moving beyond its traditional boundaries. Mechanical engineers are focusing their attention towards new areas such as nanotechnology, development of composite materials, biomedical applications, and environmental conservation. They can work as Automotive engineer, Biomedical engineer, Robotics engineer and Nuclear engineer.

In India, scope of mechanical engineering includes in fields of Electronics industry, Fast moving consumer goods industry, Pharmaceuticals industry and Rail industry.
