Child counseling, or youth counseling, however, is a type of counseling that focuses on children that are diagnosed with mental disorders. They diagnose and treat children aged 17 and younger with mental, behavioral or emotional problems.

Some child counselors specialize in certain areas, like childhood depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or abuse. Others, however, treat a wide range of mental and emotional problems in children.
There may be a number of causes for mental and emotional problems in children. These may include such things as meeting new people, divorce, death of a loved one, abuse, poverty, trouble in school, and trouble with peers. There is also evidence that some mental disorders are hereditary and caused by genetic factors.  

Role of Child Counselors

  • Interview patients and conduct tests, and they may provide family psychotherapy.
  • Devise a treatment plan or intervention as per the condition of the child.
  • Treat children with mental and emotional disorders.
  • Educate caregivers on what to expect during a child’s recovery.
  • Give them tips on how parents can help during the recovery process.
  • Work with children to develop skills and solutions to cope with and work through past problems and current challenges.

Skills of Child Counselors

Compassion:  Counselors should be compassionate and empathize with their clients and students.

Patience: Counselors often work with people who are dealing with stressful and difficult situations so they should have a lots of patience.

Listening skills: Good listening skills are essential for school and career counselors. They need to give their full attention to their students and clients to understand their problems and values.

People skills: Ability to work with different types of people is essential for counselors. They spend most of their time working directly with clients and students or other professionals and need good working relationships.

Speaking skills: School and career counselors must communicate effectively with clients and students. They should express ideas and information in a way that their clients understand easily.
